Junior Dos Santos dominated Shane Carwin in UFC 131

The bloody face of Carwin told the story, but the match-up with Dos Santos was worth its weight.

Although there were changes to the UFC131 fight card, (which is not unusual) many fans in advance might have been disappointed.  However, the card for the Vancouver BC fights proved to be a great one starting with the Featherweight bout between Darren Elkins of Hobart, Indiana and Michihiro Omigawa of Tokyo, Japan.

Elkins won a unanimous decision over Omigawa in what seemed to be a controversial decision judging by the reaction of the crowd.  I thought so too at first, but after reviewing my photos, it seemed like Elkins was landing the crisper punches even though Omigawa was clearly the aggressor.

In the post fight conferene with Dana White, he too felt that the judges descision was perhaps not right, and awarded Omigawa his earnings as if he would have won the fight.

UFC newcomers Dave Herman and Jon Olav Einemo put on a Fight of The Night performance at Roger’s Arena in Vancouver, BC. Both fighters showed good stand up skills as most of the action stayed on the feet. Herman’s hands down and head up approach seemed to bait his opponent to come in and attack which often resulted in Einemo receiving a knee. Einemo got take downs and landed lots of punches as he battled after almost five years. The action packed fight lasted just over eight minutes as Herman was able to get the TKO by ref stoppage. The roaring crowd showed its approval as the second bout of the main card came to an end.

After the fight, Herman was asked if his head up and hands down approach was part of the game plan to bait his opponent to come in. “I would like to think it is, but no, I’ve actually been working on keeping my hands up and my chin down and I guess it went out the window a little” says Herman. When commenting on the current heavy weight division, UFC president Dana White said while pointing to Herman “…having him in the division too, Huge”. Herman’s record now moves to 21-2 MMA and 1-0 UFC while Einemo to Einemo 6-2 MMA and 0-1 UFC.
